Rest in Peace, John Stanley

John, along with other successful Labour candidates in 2014, having regained a place on Crawley Borough Council

This morning we found out that Cllr John Stanley had passed away last Tuesday.

To lose anyone is painful enough, but John was still a young man and had unbelievable energy. It was far from rare to get half a dozen emails from John in a day, he was always on top of any problem or issue in in Ifield, and whenever he came into the Town Hall I prepared myself to get a full debrief of every issue affecting the constituency party, his union branch and his neighbourhood. It’s hard to imagine him never again ‘just popping-in’ to my office to ensure I know the latest goings on.

On the council, he served in a range of positions, most recently as Chair of the Labour Group and of the council’s Governance Committee, but he had also previously served as Deputy Mayor.

He was a long-time stalwart of the party, at one point the Chair of the constituency party, and of Crawley’s community. I don’t know how many local groups he was involved with from the GMB and Waterfield Primary as a school governor to the Royal British Legion and Royal Naval Association, and of course Crawley Labour Supporters’ Club.

He was a good man, always ready to help where he could and he seemed to be in an almost permanently jolly mood.

John, you were a good friend and we miss you already.

  1. A great loss. John was a good & cheerful person who always wanted to do his best for the people he represented.

  2. This is my uncle John who was a great man and will be sorely missed by the family and all who knew him. I’d just like to clarify that it was this Tuesday the 3rd October that he passed away not last Tuesday.

  3. So sorry & shocked to hear of Johns passing. I went to school with him he was one of lifes good guys. Always ready to help never a bad word to say about others. RIP John.
