Last month, the Trussell Trust published figures revealling food banks in the Trust’s network distributed a staggering 347,287 food parcels across our region in the last year – part of 3.1 million across the country, up 94% over the last five years.
It’s worth bearing in mind that the figure is just parcels from the one network, with the overall number of food banks, and consequently parcels being vastly greater.
In Crawley, we’ve been collecting for local food banks for over a year and we’re very grateful to everyone who has come out to help support local families in need (more collection dates here).
It’s easy to forget that just 14 years ago, food banks were almost unheard of, they weren’t a fundamental part of our infrastructure for keeping children alive. These figures reveal the devastating impact of the Conservatives cost of living crisis for families in Crawley.
The only way out of this is economic growth, creating improvements in people’s pay, tackling inflation and generating extra revenue for the Treasury to pay for services and those most in-need.
Every day, all around us, the evidence is mounting higher and higher – it is time fo change.
