Happy St. George’s Day, Crawley!

Today is our national day and yet instead of being able to celebrate publicly, here we are a month into the lockdown having to mark the day in our own personal ways.

In years gone-by Crawley has marked the day in various ways, particularly the cultural parades which were held around the town centre until recently. Always well attended, including by George and the Dragon, these events brought out the whole of the town’s community–including those born overseas, for many of whom St. George was also a patron saint.

Yet, instead of parades and celebrations, in some ways we all have the chance to provide a much more direct display of our commitment to our country this year, in helping it to overcome Covid-19, in protecting our National Health Service, in safeguarding the most vulnerable members of our community.

Just as in a time of war, some are called upon to make a greater sacrifice than the rest of us by providing essential services, but we can all play our part by following the rules and helping to ensure that others do the same. Stay at home, protect the NHS, save lives.
