The BIG Seven-0, Crawley’s flagship 70th birthday event, takes place in the town centre on Saturday 25 November from 1.30-6pm.
This major, family event, funded by Arts Council England, will include a colourful carnival-style parade featuring local artists, bands and community groups. It will celebrate the diversity of Crawley followed by an exciting stage programme, lights and a firework finale in the Memorial Gardens.
The parade route around the town centre goes from The Broadway, then the Historic High Street before finishing in the Memorial Gardens. With up to 400 people participating, plus dancers and drummers, it promises to be a fantastic spectacle.
The large stage will feature local and professional artists, headlined by renowned Ed Sheeran tribute act Jack Shepherd. A community marquee will house stalls from community groups and there will be food stalls along Queensway. And you can still get involved in helping make props to be carried in the parade.
Independent artists and community groups have been exploring the cultural heritage of the town – past, present and future – with creative producers Gurvinder Sander from Cohesion Plus and John Varah from Same Sky. Schools and organisations including Oriel High School, Our Lady Queen of Heaven and The Foyer have taken part to create special elements for the parade.
Individuals, families and community groups are also invited to attend a fun, free workshop to make decorations, flags and bunting at the Apple Tree Centre on Monday 20 November between 5-7pm.
Councillor Michael Jones, Cabinet member for Community Engagement at Crawley Borough Council, said: “We are delighted to be staging this large community event, which will provide a fitting culmination to the town’s 70th birthday celebrations.
“This fun event will capture the cultural vibrancy of our town and showcase the creativity and talent that exists in Crawley. So come down and join in the fun on Saturday 25 November!”
Councillor Peter Lamb, Leader of Crawley Borough Council, said: “Crawley’s Platinum Anniversary is almost at an end and after a year’s worth of celebratory events and activities, why not see it out in style at The BIG Seven-0?”
