This afternoon I attended the Royal College of Nursing’s rally outside Parliament to drop the cap on public sector wages. It was one of the better organised rallies I have attended and, despite the non-partisan nature of the college, lots of leading Labour figures were there.
Working so closely with public sector employees you can see the impact the cap is having. Not only have they seen frozen or below inflation pay increases for years but ongoing efficiency improvements mean a smaller workforce having to keep the same services running. The impact upon recruitment, retention and motivation is now really starting to bite.
At Crawley, we’ve done what we can within national pay bargaining and instructed our negotiators to support the unions’ pay claim.
What is needed now is Government action, not simply because it is the right thing to do, but to pull our services back from the brink.
