The King was welcomed to the Palace of Westminster yesterday to open the new session of Parliament and set out the legislation the Government will bring forward over coming months.
Almost two years has passed since the last King’s Speech, which saw the introduction of new laws such as the Renters’ Rights Act—introducing a range of new rights and protections for those in the private rented sector, the Employment Rights Act—the biggest improvement in workers’ rights in a generation, the Water Act—giving regulators the powers they need to clean up the water sector, and the Passenger Railway Services Act—bringing the railways back under public control.
The King’s Speech today focused on the issues which affect the security and prosperity of people up and down the length of the UK, including here in Crawley.
The speech contained measures designed to reduce the cost of energy, to cap ground rents and ban leasehold arrangements for new properties, to increase the available supply of council and housing association properties, to make aviation safer and create a new funding to tackle the service pressures associated with tourism, to improve safety in the taxi sector, to increase the speed of the courts and improve policing, to modernise our National Health Service and our railways, to modernise the NHS, cut red tape and drive down inflation.
Peter Lamb, Labour MP for Crawley said:
“While MPs try to support communities and local people in lots of different ways, constitutionally our role and powers are solely focused on changing the law. The King’s Speech today set out a programme with far-reaching consequences for reducing the cost of living, keeping people safe, and building a better future for our country, the things which matter to people across the United Kingdom. I look forward to helping to make it a reality.”
