This week is HeartUnions week, a week dedicated to recognising everything trade unions do for us, stand-by for the obligatory ‘What have the Romans done for us?’ parody video.
While trade union membership has declined over the decades–with worker pay, pensions and terms and conditions following soon after–unions remain the largest civic society organisations in the United Kingdom to this day and continue fighting for better working conditions.
They have a friend in this Government. The Employment Rights Bill will deliver the single biggest improvement in worker’s rights in generations, reversing some of the decline of recent decades. However, just because we have a Government which is on the side of working people does not mean we can do without unions, no party is in power for ever and issues vary from workplace to workplace.
In changing the law, the Labour Party is giving unions the tools they need to fight for better pay and conditions, and it is for workers collectively to use those tools to secure the improvements they want. If you want a better deal at work, the first step is to join a union.
