Head over to the Memorial Gardens today (12pm to 5pm) for a range of attractions, including live music and performances from Crawley Festival’s ‘BACKstage’ (not sure when this stopped being MAINstage) and a cornucopia of international cuisines from the Cultural Kitchen.
While Crawley Festival covers a wider range of events and attractions, BACKstage/MAINstage along with High Street Live form the most visible parts of the annual festival.
First launched in 1986, the festival was envisaged as a celebration of the town’s history and its artistic and cultural life. It came as no surprise whatsoever to discover that Crawley historian (and one of my own history teachers at Holy Trinity), Roger Bastable was one of the leading forces behind its creation.
Today, there are a much wider range of cultural activities in the town, but the events put on by the festival–with support by Crawley Borough Council–continue to provide a great combination of professional and amateur entertainment which helps to bring people together from across the community.
