Mullivaikkal Remembrance Day

Every 18th May, Tamils across the world gather to mark Mullivaikkal Remembrance Day, recalling the loss of tens of thousands of civilians in the final stages of the Sri Lankan Civil War.

The indiscriminate shelling undertaken by the Sri Lankan military during this period of the conflict remains under investigation by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and even in 2024 Tamils are effectively banned from commemorating the day by the Government of Sri Lanka.

Crawley is home to one of the UK’s largest Tamil communities and I will  participating in local events today marking Mullivaikkal Remembrance Day and wondering when the world will finally learn from such senseless tragedies.

Peter Lamb
Labour candidate for Crawley
