World Earth Day has been celebrated on the 22nd April since 1970. In the half century or so since its initiation, the level of global awareness and concern regarding environmental issues has exploded, but the day continues to provide an opportunity to reflect on the risks posed to our species’ life support system and what we can do to improve things.
The theme for this year’s Earth Day is ‘Planet vs. Plastics’ with a goal of reducing plastic production by 60% by 2040, with a particular focus on the growing body of evidence that microplastics are causing real harm to people’s health.
As a country, the UK is doing well at phasing out single-use plastics, but clearly there is still a long way to go, not only in reducing plastic production but also tackling the wider issues around the environment.
The Labour Party are committed to leading the global green transition and the party’s Green Prosperity Plan shows how this is not only essential for safeguarding our world, but how it can also help to generate the economic growth which has been absent in the UK for well over a decate.
Labour’s Green Prosperity Plan sets out how the party will go about decarbonising our national energy supply, insulating people’s homes, and supporting the shift in industry, with profits from such investments being used to create a National Wealth Fund.
For those of us in the South East, Labour’s plans will mean:
- The creation of an additional 77,000 new jobs in the area
- Investment in energy and storage facilities in the South East
- Customers in the region saved an average of £300 on their annual energy bills
- Upgrades to local ports and key infrastructure necessary to support the green transition
- Insulation and other energy efficiency improvements for 446,000 properties in the South East through our Warm Homes Plan
