The latest figures published by the Police reveal that just 6.3% of crimes reported to have taken place in Crawley last year resulted in any suspect being charged.
The Labour Party has made ‘Making Britain’s Streets Safe’ one of its central missions. Within a decade that would include halving serious violent crime and raising confidence in the police and criminal justice system to its highest levels.
Responding to the figures, Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Crawley, Peter Lamb, said:
“These figures are shocking. They show that after 14 years of Conservative rule the vast majority of crimes are going unpunished, including some of the most serious crimes that there are.
“People want to feel safe. Concerns over crime are now coming up more than almost any other issue on the doorstep. People feel there is no control over knifes on our streets, no response when burglaries happen and that serious crime increasingly goes unpunished. These figures say they are right.
“That’s why Labour will make keeping our streets safe a central mission for the next government. To do that, we’ll put victims first, and we’ll restore neighbourhood policing with 13,000 new neighbourhood police and PCSOs – fully funded through a police efficiency programme – with mandatory guaranteeing patrols of town centres by dedicated officers.”
