Analysis of local figures based on research by the Resolution Foundation reveals the staggering hit to living standards in Crawley over the last five years. The average household is set to be £1,900 worse off by the end of this Parliament than they were at the time of the last election. Low growth, stagnant wages, run-away inflation and the highest taxes in 70 years mean that across Crawley that’s a combined total of £86,450,000.
Had the Conservatives delivered the same growth rate as under the last Labour Government, the average household would now be £8,000 off. Instead, real wages are forecast to lag behind 2008-levels until 2028.
Labour candidate for Crawley, Peter Lamb, said:
“Families in Crawley can’t afford another five years of Conservative rule. The figures prove that this is the worst parliament for living standards since records began. Across Crawley we are set to be a staggering £86.5m a year worse off compared to 2019, with real wages not set to return to what they were under Labour for another 5 years.
“We know that people in Crawley are doing everything they can to get through the Conservatives’ cost of living crisis – but this government is letting them down.“Labour have been running food bank collections in Crawley for over a year now and every week we talk to people who are desperate and after 14 years of Tory rule, local charities are struggling to meet demand.
“The fact is, people are struggling because we have low growth, stagnant wages, rising prices, and the highest taxes in 70 years. There are record NHS waiting lists, children go to schools potentially filled with deadly concrete, and there is filth in our rivers. Crawley and the country are crying out for change.
“Labour has a plan to get this country moving again, put our public services back on their feet, and break down the barriers to opportunity for every child at every stage.”
