The Rt Hon Suella Braverman MP
Home Secretary
2 Marsham Street
London
SW1P 4DF
Friday 10th November 2023
Dear Home Secretary,
Since 7th October, the world has paid witness to an appalling loss of Israeli and Palestinian life in Israel and Gaza.
For Jewish and Muslim communities across the UK, many with relatives living in the region, this has been a period of great pain and anger, as they have not only had to contend with tragic news coming out of the Middle East but with a steep rise in Antisemitism and Islamophobia in the UK.
In such circumstances, we might expect that our Government would focus on efforts to end the bloodshed, to tackle genuine incidents of racial hatred, and to promote community cohesion. Unfortunately, your comments over recent days not only fall far short of what might reasonably be expected of a Home Secretary, but seem deliberately intended to stoke up Islamophobia for little more than personal political gain.
To do so at any time would be strong grounds for your removal, but at a moment of such grief and fear is utterly inexcusable. Your position is untenable, you have to go.
The Labour Party has worked hard over recent years to remove all traces Antisemitism from our party. It is beyond time that the Conservative Party began the process of removing Islamophobia from your ranks.
Yours sincerely,
Peter Lamb
Labour candidate for Crawley
