New analysis from Crawley Labour reveals the staggering hit to renters across the town over the last two years, as the cost of living crisis continues to deepen for families throughout Britain.
The average rise in rents over the last two years is £207 – hitting Crawley’s 8,312 renters to the tune of £20,647.
At his speech to the recent Conservative Party Conference, Rishi Sunak, incredibly, failed to even mentioned the cost of living crisis and his housing minister smeared renters as ‘weed-smoking bad people in gangs’.
Labour has called for real action to support renters including a Renters’ Charter, to provide new certainty for renters, ending ‘no-fault’ evictions and introducing four-month notice periods for landlords.
Publishing the figures, Labour’s Peter Lamb said:
“Renters in Crawley have taken a real hammering from the Conservatives’ cost of living crisis over the last two years, we hear about it on the doorstep every week. So it was incredible that at the recent Tory Conference, instead of support, all renters got was insults and inactivity.
“The truth is, the Conservatives crashed the economy and the rest of us will pay the price for years to come – with renters facing a double whammy. Rents are soaring, and interest rates are soaring, putting that first home even further out of reach.
“This country badly needs a change from 13 years of Tory failure – and only Labour has a plan to get our country back on its feet. A mission-led Labour government would have a plan to deliver the highest sustained growth in the G7, and we would bring in a Renters’ Charter, end ‘no-fault’ evictions, and introduce four-month notice periods for landlords. Crawley’s renters, like renters across the UK deserve more stability and certainty – only Labour will deliver that.”
