Good day to visit the Greyhound

Crawley has a proud sporting history, from producing England’s most successful manager to hosting the English Open. Yet, there is one sport which has played more of a role in the town’s history than any other.

Today, Crawley is playing host to the British and World Marbles Championship, again. In fact the evenr has been taking place annually at the Greyhound pub since 1932.

The history of the event actually goes back much further, all the way back to 1588 when a local man won the hand of a young lady of Tinsley Green in a game of marbles.

Of course, at the time the championships began the locality was very different. The pub was just down the road from one of the country’s leading racecourses at Gatwick and the area wouldn’t join the boundaries of the New Town before 1974.

Regardless, every Good Friday Crawley residents now have the chance to head up to the Greyhound and watch an international sporting event without leaving home town. How many places can claim the same?
