Today we pick our candidate for Crawley

By mid-afternoon today we will know who will be contesting Crawley for Labour at the next General Election. With Crawley’s boundaries set to remain the same regardless of the outcome of the current boundary review, the only question which remains is whether our current MP will seek re-election in the town or if he will decide his future lies elsewhere.

Despite being given far less time to campaign than when I last sought to become Crawley’s Labour candidate, I’ve done my best to speak with every member and I’ve enjoyed the many conversations I’ve had on the doorstep, phone, and through various digital platforms. In all my time, I have never seen the party so totally united in its determination to do whatever it takes to get the Tories out of office.

There is one thing I want to be entirely clear about this side of the selection. While I believe my decade and a half of experience running campaigns and serving the town in local government makes me the best placed candidate to both win at the next election and also deliver the changes Crawley needs, no matter the outcome I will do everything which is within my power to ensure the success of the party in the town and the prosperity of our community, as I have done for every Labour candidate since Laura Moffatt.

Our movement is strongest when it is built upon principles and not personalities. We must never allow personal political ambitions, successes or failures to determine our actions. We want a world which is better, fairer, and more equal for everyone, and we must not stop until we get there.

With best wishes,
