Former council leader running for Parliament again

Cllr Peter Lamb, who stepped down as the Leader of Crawley Borough Council last May, has announced that he is seeking the Labour nomination to run for Parliament in Crawley. Cllr Lamb, who contested the seat for Labour at the 2019 General Election, led the Labour Group on the council from 2012 till 2022, when in the wake of Labour regaining a majority on the council, he made the surprise announcement that he would be stepping down as Leader.

If successfully selected, he is expected to face Crawley’s incumbent MP, Henry Smith at the next General Election, which will be held by 12th January 2025 at the latest. For over a year, polls have consistently suggested Crawley will be a Labour gain at the next election.

Commenting on his candidacy, Peter Lamb said:

“Having steered the town through austerity, Brexit and COVID and regained a Labour majority on Crawley Borough Council, the time seemed right to let another leader find their feet before the next crisis arose. At that time, I said that I wanted to focus on other things, standing for Parliament is one of them.

From a third of the town’s children living in poverty and the extreme pressure most local family budgets are now facing to the endless hostile development on our boundaries and the need to ensure our local economy prospers as the UK goes carbon-neutral, the challenges facing Crawley have never been greater.

For years, I used all the resources available to local government to try to improve the town for the benefit of local residents, but found myself constantly hampered by central government. I’m seeking election, because I know the problems facing Crawley can be solved and it is only in Parliament that I can press for the change we now need.”
