Press Release: Council support for Run Gatwick

A major new sporting event coming to Crawley next year is being supported by Crawley Borough Council.

The inaugural Run Gatwick, which takes place on Sunday 13 May 2018, incorporates the International Half Marathon, 5K race, corporate 5K and a Family Run for children aged four to 15 years.

Crawley Borough Council is providing Southgate Park for the event village as well as the start and finish of all the races.

The races will take place on fully-closed routes through the parks, town centre and beautiful countryside around Crawley and Gatwick Airport.

A total of 7,500 places are available across the various races and entries are now open.

Run Gatwick is organised by the team behind the award-winning Intersport Run Reigate Half Marathon and 10K. With the prime location of Run Gatwick, the International Half Marathon and 5K is expected to attract elite, club and amateur runners from the UK and abroad looking for a highly professional late spring race in an easily accessible location.

Race Director Dave Kelly said: “We are thrilled to launch British Airways Run Gatwick and have already received an incredibly positive response from the local and international running community. We are looking forward to welcoming many seasoned runners to the event as well as first-time competitors who have plenty of time to get race fit, and we are hoping to encourage lots of people from Crawley and beyond to take up running and to sign up to one of the races.”

Councillor Peter Lamb, Leader of Crawley Borough Council, said: “I’m thrilled and delighted that we’re hosting this major event in the town. We have to improve public health and more physical activity in people’s lives will make a huge difference. I’m very happy that we are playing a major part in this event.”

Councillor Chris Mullins, Cabinet member for Wellbeing, said: “British Airways Run Gatwick will raise significant sums for local charities, encourage healthy lifestyles and bring a large community event to the town.”
